Continuity Edit

Title: The Minor Offense

Actors: Woo Bin Paek and Trung Viet Hoang

Filmed by: Ye Eun Park

Directed by: Ye Eun Park

Edited by: Ye Eun Park

This is the first preliminary task I completed during the course,

which involved Continuity Editing.

Our class was assigned to film a short video with specific features such as

  • action match

  • shot/reverse shot

  • 180-degree rule

After filming, we were instructed to individually edit the footage into a short video using Premiere Pro. I have attached the video that I edited above.

To successfully film our video, before we started filming, we created a storyboard that included every element we needed for our video to ensure we didn't miss any success criteria.

During the filming process, our group faced some problems such as holding the phone steadily while moving and acting without laughing. Fortunately, after some practice we got familiar with the process; the two 'professional actors' tried their best to memorize their script :)

Moreover, I had lots of fun filming them from different angles in different shots. Especially the part when Woo Bin walks down the corridor was the most fun part for me to film and edit because the scene required me to calculate the distance he walked and synchronize his facial expressions & gestures to make sure it didn't break the video's continuity.

After we submitted our video, as a class we had time to watch other groups’ projects and give feedback to each other. Overall, our group received feedback that complimented the continuity of the clip and the variety of angles/shots we used.

Soundscape

Title: Destiny

Sound by: Ye Eun Park

This is the second preliminary task I did during the course,

Soundscape Exercise.

Our class was given a task which was to add sounds to a 5-minute-long soundless animation, 'Destiny'.

Five groups of three were given 1 minute to edit, so our group divided our parts to 20 seconds each.

My part was approximately from 4:20 to 4:40, and here's the clip I edited.

Firstly, our group filled out a sheet with lists of the sounds we needed for the video. We labeled with time stamps and the names of the students who were responsible for the specific part. We shared each other's sounds when it was suitable for the footage; this helped us to save time researching other similar sounds, After that process, we started editing individually.

This task was much easier than the previous task for me because this task only involved editing. Nowadays there are tons of resources on the internet, therefore I can easily research suitable sound effects.

However, it was a little struggle to make sure the sounds did not break the continuity, and synchronize with the movement of the video. As I've learned from the previous task that continuity is a significant factor in a good film or drama, I mainly focused on not breaking the continuity of sounds.

By completing this task, I have realized that there are more sounds in films or dramas than I expected. Even every little detail needs to be in sync. From this task, I think I have improved on getting familiar with Premiere Pro, which is very good because I'll get to use this program a lot in the future.

From the peers' feedback, our group ultimately received a high score on synchronizing the actions and sounds, but some students commented that it would have been better if there were extra sounds to fill the audio.

Practical Assessment - Short Film

1 minute 30 seconds (excluding the title)

Title: Call it a Day

Actor: Woo Bin Paek

Voice 1: Minh Phuong Nguyen

Voice 2: Ye Eun Park

Filmed by: Ye Eun Park

Directed by: Ye Eun Park and Minh Phuong Nguyen

Edited by: Ye Eun Park

This is the third preliminary task I did during the course;

Practical Assessment - Short Film

Our class was given a task which was to work in pairs to produce a 90-second short film to showcase everything that we have learnt so far. This includes...

  • Camera – shot, distance, movement

  • Mise-en-scene

  • Sound

  • Editing

  • Genre

  • Narrative

Our short film's length exactly met the time limit: 1 minute 30 seconds, and the title is 6 seconds long.

To include every element required in the task, me and my partner created a storyboard, ensuring that we didn't miss anything that we have learned so far (different types of angles, appropriate sound effects, the storyline, etc.).

As both of us weren't confident in being the main character, we struggled a lot in searching for the actor. Fortunately, one of our classmates, Woo Bin Paek helped us by playing the main character's role (he slayed). Me and my partner were both very satisfied with his acting skills!!

I was responsible for most of the filming and all of the editing. Even though we made our storyboard as detailed as possible, the actual filming location we chose was quite different. Fortunately, the space was large enough for us to shoot from various angles. I enjoyed editing our film using Premiere Pro. However, making the length exactly 1 minute and 30 seconds was tough. But I managed to do it!

After some peer feedback time, our group was complemented a lot by the creativeness of the narrative, and the mise-en-scene.  After accepting all feedback, I re-edited our film to make it better; shortening our film. I learned a lot after receiving feedback from my peers, that it is important to let the audience identify the meaning and purpose of a film, not only the ones who made the film.
